Mountains Of Ireland

If you are thinking of a holiday in Ireland then you should take a trip into the mountains. Killarney in Co. Kerry is an area of outstanding beauty with the Macgillycuddy Reeks, the highest mountains in Ireland. If you are based in Dublin you wont have to travel far to visit the Wicklow mountains; they are easily accessible a short drive just south of Dublin City.

Even though many of Ireland's mountains are not high compared to other mountains in Europe this works to the advantage of tourism in Ireland as most of the mountain ranges are easily accessible for hiking and rarely demanding.

Many of the mountain ranges extend to the coastline; the Mourne Mountains sweeping down to the sea (as recorded in the Percy French lyrics to The Mountains of Mourne written in 1896), Derryveagh Mountains, the Wicklow Mountains, and the Glens of Antrim.

The main mountain ranges of Ireland include The Macgillycuddy Reeks (County Kerry, South West), The Wicklow Mountains (just South of Dublin), The Mournes, Glens of Antrim, Sperrin Mountains (all Northern Ireland), the Blue Stack Mountains, Derryveagh Mountains, Ox Mountains, Maumturks Mountains or Twelve Pins and the Galtee Mountains (all in the West or North West)

The highest mountain is Carrauntoohil at 3409 feet in the MacGillycuddy's Reeks range.
