Wear This Shirt 3.1415 days from Pi Day to St Patricks Day

St Patricks Day & Pi Day Combination T Shirt

Pi is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle (the distance around the circle) to its diameter (its width). The value of Pi begins 3.141592653..... and continues forever.

Since 3.14 is the 14th of the third month of March this day, March 14 is celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world as Pi Day.

Take Pi Day and add the value of Pi in days and what do you get? Yes - it's St Patrick's Day, March 17th.

So there's a bit of truth in the equation on the T Shirt.

St Patricks Day - Pi Day = Pi days

For those of you who start your St Patrick's Day celebrations on Pi Day three days earlier, this dual celebration T shirt is one that will draw attention.

Bridging the Sectarian Divide in Northern Ireland With St Patrick's Help

Leading nationalist and unionist politicians have called on the British Government to make St Patrick's Day a public holiday in Northern Ireland

March 17 is known around the world as the day to celebrate Ireland's patron saint, but while it is a full public holiday in the Irish Republic, it is only a bank holiday in Northern Ireland.

Leader of the nationalist SDLP Margaret Ritchie, MP for South Down, where St Patrick is reputed to be buried in the grounds of the Church of Ireland's Down Cathedral in the town of Downpatrick, has written to Secretary of State Owen Paterson on the issue, and her call for a change has been backed by the Democratic Unionist Party.

"Patrick is one thing that we can all, Catholic and Protestant, unite around in Northern Ireland," she said. "His legacy unites us all and he is a unifying figure in Northern Ireland. He is a symbol of reconciliation and a symbol of unity between communities."

She said Mr Paterson should back her calls for action on marking the day with a public holiday. The SDLP (Social Democratic Labour Party) leader said the move was long overdue.

Conflicting accounts of St Patrick's history have mingled with myth over the centuries. The young lad was said to have been kidnapped at the age of 16 in Britain and brought to Ireland as a slave, before he escaped, only to return to Ireland as a missionary.

Ms Ritchie said: "St Patrick's Day is a sleeping giant for tourism."

Her call for a public holiday was backed by Mr Paisley Jnr, whose father had previously made a similar call. "I think it is actually my party's policy to have a public holiday," he said. "St Patrick was a prototype Protestant, so why would anyone have any problem" adding "He lived on Slemish mountain near Ballymena in my constituency, so even better... I know there is some myth he had something to do with Downpatrick."

If St Patrick was good at banishing snakes from Ireland shouldn't he be given a chance to demonstrate his skills in bridging sectarian divides in Northern Ireland?

Full details at the Belfast Telegraph , the leading Northern Ireland newspaper.

No Wild Snakes in Ireland

There are no snakes in Ireland, except in zoos. Legend has it that their absence is due to St Patrick though all evidence suggests that post-glacial Ireland never had any snakes. The reference to snakes might be more symbolic than natural, alluding to the serpent symbolism of the Druids in St Patrick's time on the island.

The image on the T shirt is from a 19th Century print at the Library of Congress, colorized here by a fellow Zazzle designer.

St Patricks Day and Your T Shirt For the Day

Around the world communities are preparing for St Patrick's Day and many cities and muncipalities are accepting applications from community groups and other organizations that would like to participate in their annual St. Patrick's Day parade on or around March 17th.

Parades will usually include Irish dancers, musicians and pipe bands, school and community groups, and municipal service organizations such as fire fighters and police. Most parades will be sponsored by one or more organisations with an Irish theme.

Now is the time to approach the sponsors if you intend to participate in a parade or support one in some way, as late applications may be refused; from their point of view early planning is essential if the parade is to be a success.

If you like the shirt above you'll be pleased to know you can change the text to read your city or town. It doesn't have to be New York.

Claddagh Heart Save The Date Magnet

A Gold Claddagh Heart and Hands On A Save The Date Magnet

Claddaghs continue to be worn, primarily by those of Irish heritage, as both a cultural symbol and as engagement and as wedding rings. With increasing popularity the Claddagh heart has also been represented on a range of gifts for couples as this Save The Date magnet shows.

Claddagh rings have made notable appearances at celebrity weddings. At their Celtic Pagan handfasting, Irish/Scottish American musician Jim Morrison of The Doors and Irish American author Patricia Kennealy-Morrison exchanged claddagh rings. A picture of the rings was included on the cover of Kennealy-Morrison's memoirs, Strange Days: My Life With and Without Jim Morrison.

Claddagh rings have also appeared in literature. Here's a puzzle for you. In which James Bond novel did someone wear a Claddagh Ring? Who was she? I'll publish the answer in the last of this Claddagh series posts in a couple of days.

Claddagh Red Heart Sterling Silver Necklace

Claddagh Red Heart Silver Necklace For Your Irish At Heart Valentine

The Claddagh ring is worn on the right hand with the heart oriented away from the wearer, to show that the wearer is not romantically linked. When turned the other way, it shows that the wearer is in a relationship, or their heart has been taken. When worn on the left hand with the heart oriented towards the wearer, it implies the wearer is engaged or married.

Here's another example of a fine silver claddagh necklace; a great gift for a sweetheart with an Irish heart.

A Claddagh Necklace in Sterling Silver For Your Valentines - Irish Style

A Claddagh Necklace in Sterling Silver - Valentines Day, Irish Style

In just over one month it will be St Valentines Day. No doubt many Irish couples will be celebrating the day, and singles may be celebrating the alternative 'Singles Awareness Day'.

Nevertheless many Irish at home and overseas follow the traditions of the The Claddagh ring (Irish: fáinne chladaigh), a traditional Irish ring given as a token of love or worn as a wedding ring.

The design and customs associated with it originated in the Irish fishing village of Claddagh, near the city of Galway, Ireland around the 17th century.

The Claddagh's distinctive design features two hands clasping a heart, and usually surmounted by a crown. The elements of this symbol are often said to correspond to the qualities of love (the heart), friendship (the hands), and loyalty (the crown).

If you are Irish at heart and looking for something special for your valentine a Claddagh Sterling Silver Plated Necklace will prove very special.

Northern Ireland Ulster Flag on iPhone 4 Case

Red Hand of Ulster NI International Football Flag On An iPhone Case

A few days ago on the blog you saw a flag of the four provinces of Ireland displayed on it. One of the provinces cited was Ulster. Six of the nine counties of Ulster form Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK. The Ulster flag above isn't a government flag but it does share one common feature with the All Ireland Provinces Flag in international sports; it is traditionally used by supporters of the Northern Ireland Football team at national and International matches.

It features the Red Hand of Ulster inside a white star at the centre of the red cross, a Crown above it on the uppermost point of the 6 points of the star, representing the six counties of Ulster. The design is also available for an iPhone 3G. More Irish themed iPhone and iPad case designs in the sidebar on the left.

More on Irish history at a later time in the blog.

The Cliffs of Moher is also the name of a famous traditional Irish Music Jig that you will often hear played at Irish music sessions in bars and Irish music festivals. If you would like to hear it (and learn how to play it and other traditional Irish music tunes) then head over to How To Play Irish Music, a Squidoo lens where you don't need to read music and don't need to know how to play a musical instrument; you can either lilt or play the tune on a kazoo.

Four Provinces Of Ireland And A Shamrock on iPhone 4 Case

Four Provinces Of Ireland Ulster, Munster, Leinster, Connacht Flag

The flag shown here is not a government flag but it is traditionally used in the sporting calendar to represent all Ireland at International Rugby Football matches. It features the emblems of the four provinces - Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connacht at the corners of the flag on green with a white shield at the center in which there is a stem with three green shamrocks.

The flag is shown here on an iPhone 4; the orange band on the right is only decorative. This is also available on the iPhone 3G and other gifts at the Digital Dreams store.

An ancient poem, Ard Ruide (Ruide Headland), poetically describes the kingdoms (provinces) of Ireland. Below is a translation from Old Irish, courtesy Wikipedia :

Connacht in the west is the kingdom of learning, the seat of the greatest and wisest druids and magicians; the men of Connacht are famed for their eloquence, their handsomeness and their ability to pronounce true judgement.

Ulster in the north is the seat of battle valour, of haughtiness, strife, boasting; the men of Ulster are the fiercest warriors of all Ireland, and the queens and goddesses of Ulster are associated with battle and death.

Leinster, the eastern kingdom, is the seat of prosperity, hospitality, the importing of rich foreign wares like silk or wine; the men of Leinster are noble in speech and their women are exceptionally beautiful.

Munster in the south is the kingdom of music and the arts, of harpers, of skilled ficheall players and of skilled horsemen. The fairs of Munster were the greatest in all Ireland.

The last kingdom, Meath, is the kingdom of Kingship, of stewardship, of bounty in government; in Meath lies the Hill of Tara, the traditional seat of the High King of Ireland. The ancient earthwork of Tara is called Rath na Ríthe ('Ringfort of the Kings').

During the course of these blog travels we will be visiting each of the four provinces again.

Irish At Heart Golden Shamrock T Shirt

I'm Irish At Heart - A Golden Shamrock T Shirt

The shamrock is one of the ancient symbols of Ireland. It was considered to have mystical powers long before the arrival of St Patrick; its three leaves forming a triad of significance to the Irish Druids, one for hope, the second for faith, the third for love. And finding one with four leaves brings luck.

In addition to its use as a pasture crop worldwide it's also noted for its medicinal properties, having been used by native American Indians to treat fevers and kidney diseases. Thoroughly cooked and served in soups and salads the shamrock is supposedly digestible. Clover flour was used for making bread during the Irish Famine.

The shamrock shown here, worn by Kari on a dark T Shirt, is a modern interpretation of the traditional shamrock and many shamrocks will be featured on this blog as time goes by. This T shirt was the very first gift sold on the Digital Dreams Zazzle store, so it's close to our heart for a different reason.
